A) Treatment

Title: Chester the dog - Named after the main protagonist Chester.

Medium:  Short form animation for TV feature. Possibly online due to current trends with children consuming more online content on a website such as the cbbc website.

Genre/Style: Children comedy animation similar to youtube cartoon 'Simons Cat.'

Form:  Illustrator/Photoshop After Effects 2D animation, 2 Minutes.

Technique: Photoshop/Illustrator/After effects

Visual Influences:  Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell - A Youtube channel creating science videos which us a clean illustrator art style, which inspired mine , Clifford the dog- A Children show from my childhood featuring a giant red dog, Sharing both being a dog focused childrens cartoon and the aesthetic of the dog being a unusual colour.

Kurzgesagt

Synopsis: A small dog finds a way to get up onto the kitchen counter while his owners are away to eat a cake, finding a way to get away with it. Taking advantage of a simple plot to appeal  to a younger audience with less attention span.

A dog named Chester stacks objects up to get onto the kitchen counter to steal a cake, leaving crumbs, The other pet, A cat goes to eat the crumbs just as the owners come home from work,  Leaving the blame on the cat for eating the whole cake and letting Chester get away scott free.

Key characters: Owner (nameless), 'The Cat' and 'Chester'.  Both recognizable and simple making them good for children cartoons possibly leading to merchandise. The Cartoon will mainly follow Chester but some shots will only focus on the Cat and the owner.

B) Competent Storyboard:

Assets:
C) Target Audience: Anyone can view the animation as it has no age-rating areas. It would appeal though to younger audiences of 2:8 years old with a large audience due to the lack of speech including death children and children who cant talk yet. Additionally international viewers would also be attracted by the lack of general talking. The animation appeals to all genders as the all characters (apart from Chesters being named Chester) dont have specified genders. Chester the dog would appeal to children and possibly adults who like or own pets. As they could relate to the characters, though animals are universally appealing. Other products could be related to Chester such as apps and games involving the characters which would appeal to younger  'iPad Using' audiences which is a growing market. In addition to this childrens toys such as plushies would appeal to the children audience.

 D) Production Schedule

E) I am likely not going to encounter any rights issues as I am making all the assets myself. Music will be royalty free with a credit at the end, which is the only requirement to use it. It also does not have resemblance to any of the other similar programs as far as I know. (e.g Clifford the dog.).  It should be a U rated BBFC as it does not go in any possible rating categories and does not contain content unsuitable for children such as intense violence, drug use, bad language or sex. The story is completely fictitious and therefore will not offend or break copyright. The voices will be from friends or family, will clearance form signed and names in credits. One issue could be a possible unforeseen resemblance to a current animation as flat animation styles are very popular and a trend at the moment. Any assets such as Sound effects which will be royalty free from online websites such as soundbible or youtube and will include attribution in the credits.

Trends: At the moment Cartoons and children animations with Animal main characters are very popular. For example Adventure time is a a very popular cartoon with 7 episodes and 231 episodes and is still being made. In addition to this recent movies such as Zootopia, The jungle book and 'The good dinosaur' have been very successful. This has shown that Animal characters are very popular at the moment needless to say Characters such as mickey mouse, Scooby Doo etc are still popular. In addition the 2D style suits apps such as games for iPad which are growing popularity among young children due to there accessibility and interactivity.

  1. Still need production schedule. Storyboard needs more detail in regards timing and annotation of assets and moving elements.
